Champagne Taste, Beer Budget?

We love champagne, but hey, who doesn’t? It’s bubbly, and sparkly and tasty and comes in a pretty fun to open bottle! However, having a baby and currently only one income has managed to change some things for us financially. Meaning, we can’t just blow money on trivial things.

With this said, last month we celebrated my 30th birthday and hubby wanted to make sure it was extra special. For us, that meant champagne would be included. Before baby we wouldn’t have hesitated to grab a bottle of Moet & Chandon for a special occasion but at $70 a bottle our after-baby budget just couldn’t take the blow. We still contemplated the purchase but knew in our hearts it wasn’t the right thing to do. Then suddenly, a very nice lady at the store introduced us to Chandon and we made a completely new discovery.

At only $20 a bottle, we were told that Chandon was practically the same thing as Moet & Chandon. We took the nice lady’s advice and went back to our hotel room to do some research of our own. Our first bit of information came from popping the celebratory bottle and tasting the Chandon for ourselves. To our surprise, it was delicious and tasted much like Moet & Chandon! After we’d had a few sips we turned to our buddy google for more evidence. We did find some information but it was conflicting, so I decided to give the company a call (At this point I am obviously quite vested in learning the facts).

I spoke with a lovely champagne connoisseur via phone and he very politely provided me with the accurate information that for some reason I was so desperately seeking. He advised me that Moet & Chandon is actually the parent company of Chandon. The primary difference, he explained, was that Moet and Chandon is a French based company and so champagne is imported to the United States while Chandon is made in California. And there you have it. The very nice lady from the store was right and we now have a delicious champagne that we can actually afford these days.

So, the moral of the story? If you have Moet & Chandon taste but not the funds to afford such luxury then Chandon is an excellent alternative.
